A harsh and bitterly cold winter has brutalized the mountains of Western North Carolina and Asheville.
The following low temperatures have been recorded by a local amateur weather station in Oteen, just east of Asheville where we are “wintering”.
- 1/9/2014 17.8
- 1/8/2014 3.7
- 1/7/2014 -2.7
- 1/4/2014 12.0
- 12/27/2013 17.8
- 12/26/2013 18.1
- 12/25/2013 12.9
Our RV and senior mobile home park has been devastated. Not only have we been shivering under the record low temperatures, but an overnight power outage left many completely defenseless against the savage winter. We have already had one fatality in the park. Ambulances, plumbing and hearing vans are a common sight. Frozen pipes are everywhere and with the thaw now comes the bursting and torrents of water.
Not only RVs and mobile homes have been affected. The news is filled with stories of bursting pipes in regular homes and businesses. Pictures of rivers of ice flowing like frozen waterfalls down the sides of buildings. Police and Fire Departments straining under the volume of calls.
For our part, we were pretty lucky. We never were without heat or lighting. The pipes to the kitchen sink and our sewer line froze, however with a lot of hard work were back to normal within 24 hours. Our refrigerator stopped working, but it too recovered, although we lost all our perishables.
We are through the worst… for now. More later as life returns to normal.
